Today I had the real pleasure of supporting my husband, Cllr David Finch, at the Rochester Sweeps Festival, and I wanted to share a few thoughts from the day. I was helping out with the meet and greet, handing out programmes, chatting with visitors, and just enjoying the brilliant atmosphere in the heart of Rochester.

First of all – what a day! The weather was absolutely perfect. Sunshine, blue skies, and the kind of energy you only get when the community comes together. From the moment we arrived, the streets were buzzing. Families, performers, musicians, traders – the whole of Rochester felt alive.
David was on hand speaking with residents, checking in with local businesses, and soaking up the spirit of the event. And let me tell you – the feedback we heard throughout the day was overwhelmingly positive. So many people came up to say how much they were enjoying themselves, and how important it is to keep traditions like the Sweeps Festival going strong.

There’s something special about Rochester’s connection to its history, and the Sweeps really brings that out. From the Morris dancers and the chimney sweep characters to the folk music and street performers; it’s an event that draws people from all over – and reminds us of the unique identity we have here in Medway.
It’s also a great opportunity for us to listen. Several people spoke to David about local issues – from the need for cleaner streets and better public services, to concerns about development and traffic in the area. These conversations matter. Reform UK is about giving a voice back to communities, and today showed just how engaged and proud people are of where they live.
Personally, it was a privilege to be involved – not just as David’s husband, but as someone who believes in what he’s working for. It’s clear that people are responding to him direct, his no-nonsense approach and his and John’s commitment to standing up for Rochester East & Warren Wood.
A big thank you to everyone who stopped for a chat, took a programme, or shared a kind word. And hats off to the organisers and volunteers who made the festival run so smoothly. A special thank you to Shane and Clare for their dedication and the incredible effort they give behind the scenes. Events like this wouldn’t be possible without people like them.
Here’s to many more events like this that celebrate our culture, bring people together, and remind us what community spirit really looks like.
Rochester Sweeps Festival runs 3rd – 5th May so if you haven’t been, there’s still time! You can read more about the festival here: Rochester Sweeps Festival 2025
